Precision and Expertise
Specialized Skills & Professional Care for Oral Surgery
Immediately following surgery:
Take pain medication as soon as possible with a light snack before the local anesthesia wears off
- Make sure you eat 4‐6 small meals instead of 3 large meals, especially before taking any medication. It is best to start with foods that can be cut with a fork such as chicken, fish, pasta, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, ground beef. Avoid chewing on the side where the implant was placed for 30 days especially nuts and hard foods; it may jeopardize the success of the implant.
- After eating and taking medication, replace gauze and bite to apply pressure on the area for about an hour. After an hour replace gauze if bleeding persists or discontinue gauze if bleeding has stopped.
- Place an ice pack on the face for 15 minute intervals for first 24‐48 hours to help reduce chance of swelling
DO NOT SMOKE! Smoking affects the healing process of your implant!
Keep your mouth clean
Start brushing lightly in the area of the implant and regularly everywhere else. Start the prescribed mouth rinse twice a day, and rinse with warm salt water after meals. (1 tsp. salt to 1 cup warm water and mix) Avoid flossing directly in the area of the implant, you may floss everywhere else.
Realigning
Old dentures may not be worn until adjustments (realigning) have been made. Insertion of dentures too early may jeopardize a successful healing process.
